Give the MAARS Flock a New Home for the New Year!

A little more than three years ago, the MAARS Senior Staff and Board of Directors set out to review and assess the organization's mission, effectiveness, achievements, and sustainability. Through that process, the scope, focus, and mission of MAARS were refined, a strategic plan was developed, and an inspired vision for MAARS' future emerged.

A significant piece of that vision has always included the acquisition of a new facility that would belong to MAARS, be a valuable financial asset and investment for the organization, serve the needs of the MAARS Flock, and have the capacity to accommodate MAARS for the next five to ten years. As MAARS continues to grow, expanding core programs, offering additional services, and providing lifetime care for an increasing number of birds, there is little doubt that a larger facility critically needed.

In order to carry out MAARS' activities, mission, and vision, a freestanding building, with a lot of natural light, multiple rooms for the birds to spend most of their days unconfined in compatible groups, and many more opportunities for climbing, playing, socializing, and flying, has always seemed to be the best choice.

When we began our search, property values in the Twin Cities Metro area—as well as the rest of the country—were at their peak; new construction was booming and real estate investment, renovation, and sales were very profitable. At that time, we were unable to locate an appropriate, yet affordable, property.

Of course, in recent months, that picture has changed dramatically. The current mortgage and economic crises has meant that previously unaffordable properties are now within our means—if we can raise enough money for moving costs and the down payment on a commercial mortgage.

Our goal is to raise $40,000 by January 10, 2009…but we need your help!
