MAARS Teams Up for Birds with Chuck & Don's Pet Food Outlet

More than 1,200 amazing feathered creatures have come through MAARS' doors over the past five years, and gone off to a forever home or sanctuary where they will be loved and cared for. Now MAARS birds are finding a new way home — out of the shelter and through the doors Twin Cities' area Chuck & Don's Pet Food Outlet stores! Through in-store adoption day events, ongoing corporate relationships, and the support of their retail management, we hope to increase public awareness of captive birds available for placement, providing excellent avian care, and other avian welfare issues in the world today.

Chuck & Don's eleven Pet Food Outlets are located throughout the Twin Cities metro area. They are a relatively small chain of stores — compared to the super-sized warehouse pet store chains of the world — that focuses on providing high-quality pet food and supplies and superior customer service. They are huge supporters of animal rescue groups in the area, and do not sell animals in any of their stores. They carry dog, cat, small animal, and, yes, captive bird supplies in their stores.

MAARS Executive Staff, Eileen McCarthy and Alayne Rueber, recently visited Chuck & Don's corporate headquarters to teach the basics of bird care to their retail store managers. Topics discussed included proper housing, nutrition, and the health and well-being of captive birds. The staff was extremely receptive and supportive of MAARS' mission, and our relationship has grown further.

MAARS has held three adoption days thus far at the Minneapolis-Calhoun, Lakeville, and Roseville Chuck & Don's locations. At these events, people have the chance to speak to knowledgable MAARS staff members about anything they may wish to know — how to adopt, questions about MAARS, or avian care questions — and to meet a few birds available for placement. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to get out and educate the public and to encourage support of our organization. It is also fun for MAARS birds and staff to get out and socialize and have fun for the day!

The next MAARS Adoption Day will be at the Lakeville Chuck & Don's Pet Food Outlet location on November 6, 2004, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. We will also be visiting the Elk River store on January 22, 2005, and Cottage Grove on February 5, 2005. Show your support for MAARS by visiting us on these days and by purchasing your pet supplies at the Chuck & Don's nearest you!
