Remembering Animals When Disaster Strikes Dear Friends: The Indian Ocean tsunami disaster on December 26, 2004, deeply affected many of us. It is hard to comprehend that with all the communication technologies available and the advanced monitoring of atmospheric, geological, and marine conditions, our global village can still be devastated by mother nature. Such tragedies at once make us feel helpless and inspire us to help others. In addition to the loss of property and human lives, I find myself concerned for the animals whenever so much destruction is visited upon any part of the world. Floods, famine, tornadoes, industrial accidents, and war all take their toll on wildlife and captive, farmed, and companion animals, but in times of crisis the animals' fate often goes unnoticed. While there were immediate reports coming from Indonesia that many animals' superior powers of observance led them out of harm's way, there were few reports that addressed the loss of lives of the animals who live closely amongst people. Many pets, farmed animals, and captive wild animals were not able to escape the path of the tsunami. The Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR), Animals Asia Foundation, Humane Society International, World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), and other organizations sent relief workers to rescue, treat, and euthanize animals who were suffering. As we head into flood and tornado season this spring and, later this year, hurricane season here in the U.S., let's not forget that we must be prepared to protect the animals in our care and reach out to help those who may need our assistance when disaster strikes!
