Why Become a MAARS Supporting Flock Member?

Dear Friends:

It's hard to believe that the summer is almost over — time sure flies for the busy MAARS Flock!

At the beginning of the summer, MAARS introduced an Annual Membership Program. I want to thank all of the new MAARS Supporting Flock Members for joining this effort. The new Flock Membership cards are on their way to you now! And I encourage all of you to participate. By becoming a MAARS Supporting Flock Member you will receive a discount at MAARS events and the MAARSstore while helping MAARS realize its vision and plan for the future, and develop new campaigns and programs.

In this issue of MAARSianChronicles, our guest authors Joanna Eckles, U.S. Administrator of the World Parrot Trust and Denise Kelly, President of the Avian Welfare Coalition, illustrate the stark contrasts between parrots in the wild and in the pet trade and provide us with much food for thought. In the informative "Did You Know?" column, new statistics obtained from undercover investigations shed new light on the extent of the illegal trade in Indonesian parrots. The "Take Action For Avian Welfare" article by Monica Engebretson, Senior Program Coordinator at Animal Protection Institute, provides facts and tips about the humane control of unwelcome avian visitors while Marc Johnson, Executive Director of Foster Parrots, shares his successful strategies for recovering escaped parrots. And as always, the "Happy Landings" stories give an insider's view of the individual avian and human lives enriched by the MAARS Placement Program.

With autumn just around the corner, we are working to make the 5th Annual MAARS Gala Benefit a smashing success! This year's event, "Stayin' Alive," on Friday, October 21, at 5:00 p.m., will be hosted by local club celebrity, DJ Chuck Love. Chuck is a MAARS volunteer and adopter as well as a seasoned instrumentalist, producer, and man about the Twin Cities music scene since the early 1980's. So mark your calendar, dig out your 70's disco-wear, and polish your platform shoes for an exciting, fun-filled night of great music and dancing, cocktails, dinner, and fabulous silent auction items!

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Best wishes,

Eileen McCarthy
