BORN TO BE WILD

Twin Cities Bird Shelter and Adoption Organization to Hold Silent Auction and Buffet Fundraiser

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 1, 2002

St. Louis Park, MN – Midwest Avian Adoption & Rescue Services (MAARS), a non-profit captive bird adoption, sanctuary, and education organization based in the Twin Cities, will be holding its Second Annual MAARS Benefit Silent Auction and Buffet on Friday, November 1, 2002 at 5:00 p.m. This year's theme, "Born to be Wild," highlights the conflicts that arise when parrots and other undomesticated animals are kept in captivity as "pets" and explains why many parrots are given up each year to organizations like MAARS. This event is open to the public and will be held at the Doubletree Hotel Minneapolis-Park Place at 1500 Park Place Boulevard, St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Features include a cocktail hour, jazz piano entertainment, large silent auction, raffle, buffet dinner, Halloween costume contest, a short presentation by MAARS, and a special presentation by featured guest speaker, Dr. Stewart Metz, from The Indonesian Parrot Project.

Dr. Stewart Metz trained at Yale Medical School as an Internist and at the University of Washington as an Endocrinologist. He subsequently received tenure as a Professor of Medicine at two universities/medical schools but left medicine in 1999 to work full-time as a volunteer for animal rights (especially for parrots) and for parrot conservation in the wild. Stewart has written a number of articles on issues related to parrot care, ethics, and conservation. He is the President and CEO of The Indonesian Parrot Project, an organization working to conserve endangered Indonesian parrots in the wild. They focus on the Moluccan Cockatoo, the Citron-crested Cockatoo, the Palm Cockatoo, and the Great-billed Parrot. A major part of their approach is to provide sustainable sources of income to the local villagers instead of trapping birds. Stewart's talk at this year's event will illustrate the true needs of parrots by contrasting lifestyles in captivity to those in the wild. His presentation will feature his photographs of wild parrots.

Tickets are $50.00 per person and can be purchased online on the MAARS website (http://www.maars2.org/news/auction2002.php) or by calling (651) 275-0568. Dress is business casual attire or Halloween costumes.

MAARS looks forward to this once again being a hugely successful event — not only for raising much-needed funds for MAARS programs, but just as importantly, for increasing public awareness of the problem of abused, neglected, and misunderstood captive birds and their welfare.
