Gimme Shelter! Silent Auction Benefit & BuffetTwin Cities Bird Shelter and Adoption Organization to Hold Silent Auction and Buffet Fundraiser

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 11, 2003

St. Louis Park, MN – November 11, 2003 – Midwest Avian Adoption & Rescue Services (MAARS), a non-profit captive bird adoption, sanctuary, and education organization based in the Twin Cities, will be holding its Third Annual Silent Auction Benefit & Buffet on Friday, November 14, 2003, at 5:00 p.m. This year's theme, "Gimme Shelter!" highlights the plight of the growing number of parrots that are surrendered to organizations like MAARS every year in the U.S. and, increasingly, abroad. These birds lose their homes when their natural, wild behaviors like biting, screaming, and chewing become too much to bear, or when the lives of the humans who care for them go through normal changes like the birth of a baby, a divorce, an illness, or a move. Displaced parrots, which can live up to 80 years in the larger species, need veterinary and behavioral assessment and treatment, housing, nutritious food, and lifetime placement in a new adoptive home or sanctuary. MAARS is currently the largest organization in the country providing these critical services for these birds, in addition to providing pubic education about proper parrot care, behavior and training, and captive avian welfare issues.

The MAARS Silent Auction Benefit and Buffet is open to the public and will be held at the Wyndham Minneapolis Airport, 4460 West 78th Street Circle, Bloomington. Highlights include a cocktail hour starting at 5:00 p.m., musical entertainment by the Tresa Sauer Jazz Trio, a large silent auction, raffle, and a buffet dinner featuring the acclaimed Wyndham Pasta Bar.

As usual, the Silent Auction will feature a variety of fabulous items — something for everyone! A one-week beach house stay in Bonita Springs, Florida; color etchings by Steve Nowatzki; other beautiful artwork, figurines, and household decorator items; household electronics; sports gear, tickets, and memorabilia; jewelry; kitchenware; theater tickets; professional animal communication sessions; wild bird feeders; captive bird cages and supplies; gift cards and certificates; and much more!

Tickets are $50.00 per person and can be purchased online on the MAARS website (www.maars2.org) or by calling (651) 275-0568 by 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2003. One (1) complimentary ticket will be provided for media with current, valid ID. Dress is business casual attire.

MAARS looks forward to this once again being a hugely successful event — not only for raising much-needed funds for MAARS programs, but just as importantly, for increasing public awareness of the problem of abused, neglected, and misunderstood captive birds and their welfare.
