As many of you know, some conure species are surrendered to shelters because their guardians were not prepared to live with birds who are quite so vocal and full of energy; this also makes them difficult to place, as their well-developed egos demand a very special human.

In this regard, the red-headed conures are amongst the most challenging birds with whom MAARS works. The Placement Committee puts a lot of time and effort into finding appropriate homes for these birds and I am delighted to share Coco and Jake's success stories with you.

Calling All Groovy Green MAARSians: Boogie on Down to "Stayin' Alive"!

Dust off your disco-wear and get your tickets now for Stayin' Alive, the 5th Annual MAARS Groovy Gala Cocktail Hour, Dinner & Silent Auction on Friday, October 21! This year's event will be held at the Radisson Plaza Minneapolis. Enjoy a gourmet dinner, cocktails, great 70's music, superb company, and the chance to bid on fabulous auction items or win the raffle! Our special host will be local club celebrity, DJ Chuck Love. Chuck is a MAARS volunteer and adopter as well as a seasoned instrumentalist, producer, and man about the Twin Cities music scene.

Tickets are $50 each before October 12, 2005, or $65 thereafter.

Watch the Birdie: MAARS Holiday Photo Offer

MAARS is offering an exclusive invitation to our friends and supporters to utilize the expert photography skills of MAARS volunteers Deb and Kurt Oldenburd to create a memorable portrait of your bird or entire flock. Photo sessions will be held at The Landing Conference Room on October 29 and 30, and November 12 and 13. Many options and packages are available, including holiday cards. A portion of the preceeds for this exciting opportunity will be donated to MAARS by Oldenburg Studios.

Jake: It Ain't Easy Being Green

Jake is a Cherry-headed Conure with a fuzzy grey breast and a huge personality in a little green body; he is full of sugar and spice and lots of strong opinions about who he does and does not like. Jake was placed with MAARS when his guardian became pregnant; he became very protective and possessive of her and made it clear that her husband had become an unwelcome interloper.

When Marisa started volunteering at The Landing during Spring 2005, it was love at first sight for Jake. Marisa took a little more time before declaring her love for this feisty little guy. Coco: Helping a Feathered "Greenhorn" Find Her Inner Bird

Coco is a Cherry-headed Conure who had been very bonded to her human female guardian before landing at MAARS. The Placement Committee wanted her to have a home where she would become part of a flock and learn to socialize with other birds, but that meant that she would need a very patient and experienced care-giver to teach her flock rules. MAARS Shift Manager, Placement Counselor, and Executive Committee Member, Liz Alt, had a full house already, but she thought that her home might be just the right place for Coco.
