In February 2002, MAARS received an inquiry from a woman in North Dakota about sanctuary for two birds she had adopted from her local humane society. She was concerned that these birds have the opportunity to fly and to experience the outdoor air and warm sunshine.

Evita & Miguel are wild-caught Cuban Conures. They were transported to The Landing by a MAARS Volunteer in May 2002. When they arrived, both of them were in very poor feather — most likely the result of a nutritionally insufficient diet. They had also spent many years in small cages and were not physically strong. The decision was made to keep Evita & Miguel at The Landing until their health and strength improved.

Miguel 's lower abdomen is bare and Evita is severely disabled; although she can fly and perch on wide branches or flat surfaces, she does not have full use of her legs and feet. There is no way to know whether Evita hatched in this condition or if she sustained an injury during capture or sometime later. However, their overall health has improved significantly and they spend their days flying around the Cockatiel Room at The Landing, sitting on top of their house in the full-spectrum lighting and visiting with their neighbors. Whenever staff arrives at The Landing, Evita & Miguel are very vocal about wanting to get out and begin their day! Neither of them have much other use for humans and they remain very close. Miguel watches over Evita, making sure that she keeps up with him!

Update: Evita & Miguel were strong enough to be moved to The Oasis, an outdoor sanctuary in Arizona, early in 2004! They are now living together, enjoying the fresh air, rain, and sunshine, as nature intended.
